A class D audio amplifier is basically a switching amplifier or PWM amplifier. In this type of amplifier, the switches are either fully on or fully off, which significantly reduces the power losses in the output devices and give efficiencies of 90-95%. Class D amplifiers take many different forms; some can have digital inputs and some can have analog inputs. They operate by rapidly switching back and forth between the supply rails, being fed by a modulator using pulse width, pulse density, or related techniques to encode the audio input into a pulse train.
