• Rest of Latin America
Argentina is expected to witness the fastest
growth in the region’s biomass power market in the
forecasted period. Latin America is an economy that extensively relies on oil
& gas for the energy mix. The region, however, is now focusing on power
generation via renewable resources. This, in turn, is expected to foster the
development of its biomass power market.
Currently, biomass and other sources account for less than 1% of
Mexico’s electricity production. However, to attain the nation’s goal of
producing 5% of its electricity from biomass by 2030, major investments have
been made to promote the use of biomass in the energy generation mix. In May
2016, the biomass plant at La Perseverancia landfill near Cuautla, in the state
of Morelos, began operation. This was done in accordance with the
aforementioned objective to increase the share of biomass power in the
country’s energy mix. This biomass facility uses solid waste to generate
electricity. These developments are expected to bolster the Mexican biomass
power market’s growth.
Statistics from the Biomass Committee of
Argentina’s renewable energies chamber (CADER) show that there are 60 to 80
biomass plants in the country, with 20 of these having large facilities. These
plants are utilized for treating urban organic or solid waste components, as
well as mini-lagoons or mini-bio digesters covered for home consumption. These
developments are indicative of a positive outlook for the biomass power market
in Argentina.
Gasification technology involves converting solid biomass into a
combustible gas by means of multiple thermochemical reactions. One of
gasification’s key advantages over other biochemical conversion processes is the
speed at which the product may be produced. However, in comparison to other
processes, the high cost of gasification is a significant barrier to its
implementation. Although, there are ongoing research and development activities
for membrane separation technology, which is anticipated to lower the
implementation cost of gasification.
Triton’s report assesses the market according to
technology, feedstock, and application. Here, the technology segment comprises
gasification, co-firing & CHP, anaerobic digestion, and LFG combustion.
The distinguished players in the biomass power
market include Suez SA, Xcel Energy Inc, Orsted, Ramboll Group, Valmet Oyj,
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, and Ameresco Inc.
