A UAE resident, on average,
generates 17.2 kg of e-waste per annum. In 2016, total e-waste generated in the
country was 134,000 tons, as per estimates from the Global E-Waste Monitor
Report. The amount of waste generated has only proliferated in the succeeding
years. The national government has recognized this, and therefore, has started
to take action to counter this threat. For instance, it has established the
Integrated Waste Management System to combat the growing threat of e-waste.
This system has been designed to divert 75% of the total MSW (which also
includes e-waste) away from landfills by the year 2021. The municipalities of
the seven Emirates, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are also lending their
support to private organizations promoting and managing the proper recycling of
e-waste.
For instance, the largest
recycling plant in the world has been built in Dubai Industrial City, in
collaboration with a global-level recycling company Enviroserve. This plant has
a capacity of processing close to 39,000 tons of e-waste annually.
Several such campaigns are
being initiated to create awareness among the general public about e-waste
recycling, with the hope of tackling the ever-rising e-waste problem
successfully in the years to come, and embracing a sustainable future. Thus,
the e-waste management market in the United Arab Emirates shows immense
potential for growth in the forthcoming years.
